Quick Start for Yable/Yafray?

Let’s say that I have a .blend file and I would like to do what is
minimally necessary just to get a quick rendering (as when I do F12
in Blender) in Yafray using Yable. What is necessary to do this?
When I take the average .blend file, and press Export after running
Yafray (and then run Yafray on the resulting .xml file), I get a
black targa image. So clearly, I need to make some settings in
Yafray just to see something approximating a rendering similar
to F12. Can such settings be made default in Yafray, and what
are they? Thanks for help! I am assuming that all material information
is picked off already by Yafray and so I don’t have to do a lot of
post-processing work unless I want to fine-tune the rendering.

The fact that you have a black screen render means that you’re half way there

All you need to do is crank up your lamp power settings. Normally for a spot lamp, I use a setting in the range of 500 to 750, for a soft lamp (side lighting) a little lower about 250 or so. I think it’s just a matter of becoming comfortable with what good lighting settings are for Yafray as you did with Blender; so do a lot of test renders without using any settings that would relly increase your rendering times.

I’m not sure why the difference in settings for lamp power settings.
Maybe someone else can explain that.

Good Luck.

I presume you are talking about the lamp power settings in the
Yable interface? I did the following: created a Blender scene
with one lamp, one UV sphere, and one plane. Did an F12, and
it looks fine.

I went into Yable, and pressed HEMI LIGHT and PATH LIGHT.
The maximum powers are 25 and 15 respectively, so I set
these. I then did EXPORT but still a black targa image once
I execute

yafray testscene.xml

I can email the testscene.blend file to you if you want. It was
really quickly done. Better yet, I have placed it at:

is picked off already by Yafray and so I don’t have to do a lot of
post-processing work unless I want to fine-tune the rendering.

Wrong!

YaBle is more an editor than an automatic exporter…

These are quick and dirty screenshots of your testscene…

yes, this helps considerably. I was laboring under
the wrong assumptions, and now I realize the editing
functionality, this makes more sense.
