RacePhysics3 file available(modelers please see)

hi, as you may know i made the physics and controls setup for a racing game for bhpgames.

this will be my third and most complex racing game i have worked on. my goal is to create gameplay in blender that is comparable to a retail racing game such as the obvious gran turismo.

since bhpgames is headed in a different direction, i am wondering if a few good modelers would like to help out to make this realistic racing game. i am a decent car modeler, but a single car takes me about an entire day. (900 faces)

desigened on blender 2.41, but also works very well for 2.25 (may need to tweak a few variables)

What is in this race game starter file?
1 base car which can be duplicated without serious logicbrick/python/variable interference
1 summer track (on-road racing)
1 winter track (rally like racing, lots of sliding)

the base car has many EASY to change properties such as:
mass
gas force
brake fprce
reverse force
tilt force (about Y axis)
handling
sound levels
boost/nitro feature
grass capability
ice grips
snow capability
downforce/traction (by speed and aerodynamics)
shock softness (tilting about X axis)
*see info file in .blend

splitscreen multiplayer is possible but on a seperate file

local velocities are calculated making it easy to create correct steering in reverse, and sideways motion, proportional animated steering/wheelspin

proportional tire screetching and variable engine pitch work, but they do tend to crackle and not work as well in blender2.41 as opposed to 2.25

If you are interested in helping out, or having questions you can contact me at [email protected], thats with two underscores. i have to go back to classes at university on monday, so i’ll have less time to work on it. I am looking for somewhat hi res cars around 1000 faces, not too strict doesnt matter that much and realisic race tracks, onroad and some offroad rally racing, mud/snow/ice/sand/cement…

i’m kind of hoping that i can get some average everyday cars that are common too, that we may drive and see in real life, but dont often drive in racing games, like a cavalier, firefly, suvs, sentras…whatevers in ur garage. i will likely build the single player races in blender2.25 because it is alot smoother and more efficient than the newer more feature packed blenders. this means that the new glsl multltitexture, splitscreen yada yada will not work in it. if you plan on helping out, please keep this in mind, unfortunatly blender 2.25 does not have good specularity on dark textures, so i’m hoping that all car bodies will be a vertex color and a fake enviroment map as on the demo car in the file above.

well… that was an incredibly long post…hope i didnt miss anything

please help bring this game into existance
hoping for at least 12 really nice models and numerous tracks… of course the more the merrier.
i can do the appending, menus, car/track selection, possibly AI, and more modeling.
whether you are interested or not, give the file a whirl, it might be some fun. feel free to start your own racing game with this file.

last update feb 18

Hello

looks promising, and this clean look can be nice, just need some
twists
Well, if you want, keep working on the “logic” side, and as soon as I’ve
a bit of time I’ll work on the graphic side and add a car or two…maybe…can’t
promise
Bye

Wow man, this is great timing I just got myself a thrustmaster ferrari steel wheel and foot pad - I going to test my skill on your game.

( I have about 23 spare of these if anyone want one -let me know )
also I have:
All Thrustmaster band
20 Xbox Ferrari GT2 wheel and pad
5 PS2 Ferrari PC-pS2 duel wheel and pad
20 wireless universal Xbox/PC/PS1/PS2 Ferrari wheel and pad
20 wireless PC vibration feedback joysticks
etc

I am located in Australia but I can delivery worldwide.

nice work with the physcis, the car reacts very solidly, I especially like how the car rolls when braking, turning etc.

“feels” very good to drive arround - me like it!

but me beeing a noob and so (learning blenderGE…) - how did you do the skybox - I can´t find andy texture or material assigned to the cube - where does the blue sky come from?

Hello

probably “vertex colours” technique
A little tut here:

Bye

I’m curious as to what you mean by that.

These car physics rival what erwin is doing in bullet. But of course the bullet car physics are still a work in progress.
I wish I could help on a project like this but I’m afraid I’m not much of a modeler or texturer.

Absoultely incredible! I love those physics! This is on the right track…get it…track…

:expressionless: %|

No but really. Its great. Very well put together and very fun.

Very nicely done. The physics are impressive. This would be so much better with more speed / turn-rate controls (ie. with an analog joystick). I’m sure you’re working on that…

OT a bit: I wonder if any of these wonderful new physics capabilities might be applied to a skateboard / snowboard /surfing type game?

magic man:
-“since bhpgames is headed in a different direction”

by this i mean, it seems that they are headed towards more of a “mario kart” style game as opposed to a more serious/realsitc race. i do admit, arcady racing games can be fun, lol… loved the hotdog car, but i think i’ll cut out the weapons, onroad picups, boosts, etc… so that the players can concentrate on just the driving alone. maybe i’ll have some crazy cars that can only be used by a cheat code.

bigkahuna:

i have considered a joystick for proportional steering, but i’m not exactly sure how it works yet, and i dont think many people are willing to plug in a joystick just to play this game. we’ll just have to live with the tap tap tap… method

if you would really like this this file converted into a skateboarding game file, you can PM or email me. i’d just change the Up trigger to always, increase the tilt by alot, and inverse the tilt direction… u could probably do it urself.

ALL:

i’m glad to hear that you guys liked it. unfortuneatly i am not the worlds greatest modeler, and it would be a shame to have these physics go to waste. I am currently modeling a track and i will model more cars, but i have not had alot of free time lately (midterms+assignments). I hope to get some people to help out making a track or a car for this game.

please email or PM me if you are interested.

thanks

heres a pic of a borrowed track

http://www.geocities.com/ineedanewbike/race3/race3track.jpg

awesome
Although i cant really run the car game with the lamborgini in it because of performance issues… lol
But its still cool … I sorta tweaked GKG a little…

But it does look like you got somethin goin good so far.
My suggestion: Work on the graphics a bit more(more cars, more tracks) and features(ability to choose what car and what track, couple more sounds, maybe a main menu, make it an actual race, and i can go on and on but yea…), keep it open source(3rd party modifications to it such as cars and etc could boost its popularity)…
(I know you have lots of these idea’s down… im just sayin…)

i don’t think you will have a very hard time with menu’s, being that you already seem to have some of the basics on menu’s down.
Might i suggest a menu with a background, bouncy text, and neat gfx.

And a name for your game…

i personally havent seen a full blown racing game with actual physics and things… Ive seen a racing game, but of course its physics were crap.

Good luck

Is there a way to map the joystick or a wheel pad to your game?

By the way your game work great. :stuck_out_tongue:

hey, those are great models you found, sorth, but i think they’re a bit too high poly

yes, joystick is possible, but kinda shaddy… i could only get 1 axis working to steer and i had to use trigger buttons for gas and brake, i was using a logitech wingman controller

it works okay, but the deadzones around the edges are horrendus, which is really too bad. the joystick values seem to reach a max when i’ve only pushed the joystick about half way in any direction. o well, its still pretty cool.

no gaurentees that it will work with your other joysticks/gampads correctly, you could try changing the axis (which i found does absoulutly nothing) or changeing the buttons.

the deadzones may also be partly windows and the gamepads fault… not sure., maybe u can configure it in windows.

you can download the joystick version here

other than that , no major updates

Thanyou I will check the joystick version :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

id love to be part of your team although i dont have glsl capabilities, car modeling is my fancy and i too have wanted to build a gran turismo style game for a while
