Racer?...the cross-platform simulation.

I’ve been playing around with Erwin’s vehicle script (which totally rocks!), and I came across this “thing” called Racer.

http://www.racer.nl/

I tried it out a little. It looks cool, but the physics seems kinda lousy next to Erwin’s. Does anyone know if it can be adjusted to even compete with Erwin’s?

Also, does anyone know how to import the tracks and vehicles to be used in blenders GE?

hi Nikana,

last time I checked, I saw a few tutorials in the racer forums on importing custom content.

that was about a year ago, I cannot get it to run on my system for some reason…

I agree about the physics.

Eh, you’re kidding, right? Bullet vehicle simulation is very basic compared to Racer in which you can adjust nearly any parameter of the car. Racer physics are also very realistic compared to arcade like Bullet vehicle. There’s not even brake in Bullet vehicle… Of course you can improve Bullet vehicle script, but there’s a limit.

However, I think Bullet vehicle script is one of best “recent” features. Much better than moving car with motion actuator (which isn’t even reasonable anymore because anisotropic friction doesn’t work).

True, in the last few minutes I’ve discovered that Racer appears to be very versatile. Perhaps more versatile than I care about. But then again I am hitting some of the limits you speak of with the Bullet script.

In the end, for me…
Bullet = fun & workable
Racer = complex & a little too real to be fun

(at least until I can actually drive a car around a corner successfully - I really suck at racer. Lol.)

Yeah, try to spin your car in Blender - not possible, it goes like a train. Try to slide around the corner with handbrake… oh, where’s the hand brake?

I think once you learn to master the realistic handling it gives more satisfaction than driving the Blender vehicle. Regardless this I still love Bullet vehicle script, because it’s the best BGE has. You can make games using it. You can’t do that with Racer.

If you try to play Racer with keyboard I believe you will have hard time staying on the road. Steering wheel and pedals are much better with such a realistic game.

You don’t necessarily need to use Erwin’s car… I scaled my 4x4 demo up with a bigger map and a 4th gear. Hit “pad4” and “H” for 4th gear, high range. You can do donuts all day long… space for a handbrake. Delete the jeep body, add a racecar body and scale the wheels down…

Don’t forget to enable all frames. I’ve been meaning to make a racecar version of this for a while, just haven’t had time.

I just got the bleeding edge beta working on my system…

Oh! the controls are very sweet… I set the steering to my left joystick, and the throttle to my right analog stick…

Major difference  thank you for the controller tip PSK131 , makes a very big difference compared to the keyboard.

Looks like we can port things over from blender using the ASE format ,from 3d studio…
Hope it let us port in Obj or 3ds too… i really want to make a race track.

I might try some importing when I get home.

Here ya go.

can do it right from blender  this is going to be fun

The whole idea for Racer is way cool. It appears that Cars and Tracks can be interchanged and tested - awesome idea.

Its like a NeedForSpeed or Burnout game.that evolves. I’ll certainly spend some more time playing with Racer, maybe I’ll even learn how to make my own tracks and cars.

Have eny of you played Rush 2049? The extreme physics on that game are so fun. I wonder if Racer can acheive those kind of physics.

Yea! NeedForSpeed and Burnout are quite realistic… I am finding that racer is much more realistic than them…

For a great track try swiss stroll:

this engine really has evolved from when I was first playing with it.

After one of us learns how to get a car from blender to Racer, perhaps we should make a post in the Challenge forum… The F1 challenge every year is a big success…

Check out rFactor, another very realistic race sim: http://www.rfactor.net/ Free version has two cars and tracks.

psk131,

That looks like an awesome game, thanks for the link.

Poof, take this for a spin. I deleted the 4x4 body, created a track, added a porche body I found, and added some more gears. I think blender/bullet could go a long way toward making a nice free racing sim without a bunch of coding.

I followed the tut mentioned to create the track (mostly) I want to see how far I can take a driving sim in blender using an all bullet ragdoll vehicle.

Has a suspension, 6 speed, and it’s really easy to add bodies/change handling etc. No scripting. All constraints and logic bricks.

Racer looks nice but I want to know this.

-Does is have any traffic?
-Do pieces fly off the cars?
-Is the environment destructable to an extent?
-How hard would it be to make a mode based on crashing?

I know this is asking for a lot but I’ve been pretty spoiled playing Burnout;)

Aren’t we all, Burnout rocks!!!

Does Racer support a crashing environment? … it does not appear so.
Will it support a crashing environment? … it does not appear to be designed for arcade racing, so no
Can a crashing environment be implemented into it? … hmm… with programmers (and lots of time) anything is possible.

As for the near future…Racer is not anywhere close to Burnout!
