Radial Build effect... is it possible?

I’m totally stumped. How do you achieve an effect like building a mesh radially, like a scanner sweep. I tried the build modifier, but it seems to follow the edgeloops only. I want the mesh to radially build.

The build modifier works like I want to when the mesh is radially symmetrical. But I want the effect to work on a non-symmetrical mesh, or better yet on an extruded curve.

Help on this? Is there a controllable way to build a mesh aside from the modifier?

Use an animated texture set to control the alpha of the object’s material.
