Radial shockwave with particles or smoke - how?

I am thinking of having a scene where something like a coin (but larger and heavier) falls on the hard dusty ground, causing shockwave from the impact to spread dust clouds radially.

How would I do that using either particles or smoke or both? Thanks.

How about this…create a torus mesh and place it inside a smoke domain. Then assign a particle system to the torus and have it emit only outwards into the domain.
