Radiosity confusion...

Hi all,
I missed a few Blender releases, came back in with 2.31. I’m a bit confused about the new radiosity features. I know how to use the the old radiosity renderer, but I see new radiosity buttons in the materials buttons and the render buttons, how does that all work? Is it separate from the original radiosity renderer? Do I need to use both? Is there a tute somewhere?
I haven’t had much luck with experimentation…
