Here are the bare bones for a couple of random hair material nodes. AFAIK Children all retain the parent material. If I remember right, if you try and use generated or object, the random texture is 3-d through the hair which is rarely what you want. I’m away from my blender machine for a few days, on the road with a laptop, so I cant test it.
Note, mesh must be unwrapped.

It feels like a workaround, but it will get you procedurally random hairs. I should have noted that the emitting mesh needs to be unwrapped.
