raytracing

(blenderage) #1

Ok you’ve probably answered this question before but I want to know having used blender for a bit I realised that to make top notch renders you’ll need a raytracer, can anyone direct me to free raytracers and tell me what success they have had with them. Thanks (id thought Id ask you guy before searching for stuff.

Try one of these:

VirtuaLight (blender export script included in download)
http://www.3dvirtualight.com

LightFlow (export script available. search the python forum)
http://www.lightflowtech.com/

I like POV-Ray myself : www.povray.org . the demo images there speak for themselves, really

The exporters for it are getting pretty good. Search the python forum for a plugin called ‘POV-Anim’ by jms, and you’ll get there. Good luck mate!

Whats a SGI IRIX: blender 3D, pov-ray3.1 or Lightwave 5.6 raytracing solution?

Why don’t you try “megapov” instead:

Will try tonight. Whats the best way to get Blender files to Megpov on the IRIS platform? Currently I’m running Blender 3D, Pov-Ray and Lightwave 5.6 on the box. I will love to use either the Povrays or the Lightwave 3D for raytracing.

Povanim is compatible “posix”, I think that you can use this script to export blender file to megapov without any change. Just push the button on the top of main script windows. Never tested on SGI.

I am searching a way to make a povanim version for mac, but you will have to install full python package.

Light can be seen both as an electromagnetic radiation and as particles (photons)

In any case it is believed that light propagates in straight line in an homogeneous medium and changes of direction when hitting a different medim.

In this latter case it can be reflected, diffused or refracted (usually all theree phenomena)

Reflection is why you can use mirrors
Diffusion is why your room is lit even if sunrays actually hit a small portion of your floor when caming in from your window
Refraction is why a crystal vase shed light in those nice patterns.

A RayTracer is something which models this phisical behaviour of light.

Blender is not such
