Reaching Summit

Well I felt like having a stab at a big project, so here we go!
My plan is to make a couple of mountaineers ascending a mountain.

So far I’ve made this much progress:

Mountaineer progress

The ice axe is nothing amazing but meh it will do. I am also working on another ice axe so that there is more diversity and it will probably be finished soon. The shaders on the second image was a little test to merely see how it would look, tell me if I should remove them. I’m not really sure but I think the oxygen mask needs more visible folds, thoughts?

Oh and btw I just noticed the ice axe shaft needs beveling, fixed

I’m mainly basing my mountaineers on this reference image:

Have a good day

Did some mountain tests today. Also modelled a second ice axe and an oxygen tank, but I don’t have any shots of them, they will come tomorrow.

after several attempts in World Machine I think I’m moving in the right direction. Here are some screens:

Only 2k texture though, will probably need around 12 or 16 k for final image, not sure if my pc can handle it :stuck_out_tongue:

oh and btw if anyone wonders the mountain is 14 km2 and around 6000 meters high.

Have a good day

Here are the shots of the 2 ice axes together and the oxygen canister, as promised. I think the second axe turned out better than the first, both topology wise and how it looks but hey, practice makes master!

I’m not really happy with the oxygen canister and I will try to remodel it. Because of some strange shading artefacts hat occurred when using proximity loops, I had no other option than to use the edge split modifier. Still, it won’t be very visible

Can you use split normals?

Thanks for your suggestion, but I had already fixed the problem when I saw this.

So I remodeled the canister and hooray no strange issues!
Here is the new model (proximity loops)

I’m sorry to say this everyone but I just injured my arm in a rope swing accident where I fell down from the platform I was standing on (tree) and fell 3 meters to the ground on a patch of sand sacks, I just took x-ray and luckily it was not fractured or broken (whew!) but because of this development will be slowed down a bit. I also injured my spine quite a bit but that doesn’t really affect me

Have a good day

Ok so quick update here. I found this cool website which tells me what he would use: http://www.mountainguides.com/gear-recommended.shtml. Have a look for yourselves

I have modeled shoes and gaiters, will bake normals soon, I just wanted to hear anyone’s opinion on how they look and if I should change anything.

Next thing on my list is to make crampons, or he would have a hard time climbing :o

IMPORTANT
Right now the gaiter on the left is a mirror of the right, I will sculpt unique fold for it too but I’m wondering if it looks right, I can’t really decide.

(edit) realized the image is a little bright, should I upload another version of the image?

Have a good day
