Realism Study – Weathered Axe

I made this prop to test how far I could push realism in Blender. Focused on believable wear and natural materials — aged wood, rusted steel, nothing heroic. Just an everyday axe that’s seen some use.

Rendered in Cycles. Textures in Substance Painter.

Feedback welcome.

Very believable wood and metal textures. Nicely done.

Three things come to mind:

  • the wood at the end of the hatchet’s head clearly isn’t end grain
  • the handle’s shape seems too smooth, like it was rounded over very consistently. And I’d expect signs of wear where it was grabbed during use.
  • I’m missing some dents, irregularities and imperfections especially along the edges of the hatchet’s head. The material shows age and wear but the actual 3D shape looks like it was precisely machined.

Very nice work though, great material!

Thank you for the detailed feedback. You are right, the end grain on the wood should be more accurate and the handle could use more signs of wear in the areas that get grabbed the most. I also agree about adding more dents and irregularities on the head to match the aged material. I really appreciate you pointing these out, it will help me push the next piece further.
