Did anyone ever try to play the outerra game it is supposed to have close to actual sized planets and it is demo?It would great if that game engine could be used in conjunction with blender.
If your plan is to import a planet’s worth of geometry data into Blender, good luck trying to get it in unless you can somehow either get a semi-trailer full of RAM or a computer that won’t take days importing the thing.
The reason is this, from what I’ve seen of that engine, it makes use of procedural displacement that increases the detail the closer the ground is to the camera, now Blender as of now would not be able to import any type of displacement in the form of a procedural texture unless someone developed a unified procedural file format that would be implemented for both Outerra and Blender. The only other option as a result would be to either import everything as raw geometry (perhaps with vertex color channels), or a series of image maps that would be enough to cover an entire planet. (which would be more or less a prohibitive amount due to the size of the world).
Now if you’re talking about importing Blender data into the Outerra engine, it would all be a matter of writing an exporter specifically for that engine.
What outerra game engine does is what i would like the blender game engine to do by default.I would like it to a have a make planet button in blender and other buttons for terrain types and for you to be able load terrain meshes you made into it to be used in the blender game engine.I know that would be a lot of work but it would be great.I wish the devs would work on that.
