I have a model, which consists of several objects (i.e. body, hair, cape, hat, staff, etc) and a rig, that contains all of the elements. When I connect the rig to the objects, using automatic weights, I tend to delete the vertex groups that aren’t used by the specific object. I do that for all the objects. However, once I’ve done that, I’d like to re-calculate the weights (automatically), using only the remaining vertex groups/bones. Is this possible?
You can select whatever bones you want and then redo automatic weights in Weight paint. On complex characters I usually put the bones I want in a bone group and select that group before I switch to weight paint. Kind of clutzy, but it works.
Okay, it seems like while in weight paint mode, opening the “Weights” sub-menu has the option “Assign Automatic from Bones”, which is exactly what I was looking for.
