Reducing Polygon Count In Imported Models

Hi everybody,

I am trying to import a model I got but there is an issue with the polygon count which is seriously high. I tried the decimate modifier in Blender but it failed hopelessly, basically because all the polygons are triangulated and under very very high density in order to create detailed seams and creases. Is there any other way that I can reliably reduce polygon count on triangulated meshes?

Thanks!

I hear good things from:
http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/

One thing I do is select the mesh, use the command Ctrl-F to bring up the faces menu and select Tris to Quads and that should convert most of the tris to quads lowering the poly count. Also, while the mesh is selected, use the command W to bring up the special menu and select Remove Doubles, That will get rid of unwanted extra vertices and doubled up faces.
