Reducing Shadows Behind Cartoon Glasses?

I’m making a 3D version of one of my characters, and when I draw her in 2D she just has dots for eyes and her glasses sort of read as her sclera (think Dexter or Milhouse). Because of how thick her frames are I’m getting really strong shadows behind them. Is there a way to reduce the shadows behind her lenses?

Here is a render of what I have so far

And here are some examples of how she normally looks in 2D:

I’d like for her pupils and freckles to still be readable. In a perfect world the lenses would look really opaque, just leaving those two things visible, but I’d settle for things to just be brightened a bit. Maybe some kind of light source behind her glasses that doesn’t look too obvious? Could I somehow get the lenses to act like a filter to change the colors behind them through compositing? I’d appreciate any creative solutions and am pretty flexible with how it ends up looking
