i have a question: i am modelling my car. so i made reference photos myseelf. i took one from the back and from the side. now i put these into blender by uvmapping them to 2 planes at 90°. i then pressed N and put in the correct sizes so that the ratios are correct.
this all works ok, except that the cars in the two photos aren’t taken from the same distance. therefore, in one it is bigger than the other. i try to get them the same size by doing the following: I model a simple reference eg. at the top, at the rear light and at the exhaust so that i can get them to line up in both views.
however, when i resize the back image so that it fits two of the references, it doesn’t fit the third. Does anyone know the reason for this?
here are some images to help explain:
the first one is the side view from which i modelled the reference points and the second one shows how they don’t line up.
The reason is inhearent in the optics of the camera. There are special lenses and even special cameras designed specifically to overcome this problem most evident in architexture.
A possible workaround is to select a plane and hit ‘T’ and choose ‘Size’. Of course you’ll have to fiddle with that every time you move from one plane to the other unless you can set the two of them up to correspond at a compromised starting point and then leave them be.
Find the center of the car (somewhere on the roof) and measure off camera positions, back, side and front. Then use a tripod (or a pole that the camera will sit flat on) to keep the camera at the same height. You will probably still end up having to ‘take the middle road’ but your mesh won’t be a ladybug. You could also go to the dealership and con the guys there out of a photocopy or two from the service manual. Shucks, they might even have the blueprints on their HD.
