How do I remove those **** materials that fill up the data select box? I’m positive I’m not using most of those items but they still remain. Is there a way to delete materials?

Hit the X next to the ones you don’t want in F5 Materials datablock so they get unlinked (O in front of name in menu) then save and reopen. Some of them may be linked to more than one object and you’ll have to make them Single User by clicking the number in the same datablock.
