Render large image without crashing (6094 x 4724)

I’ve been stuck on the following problem for several days now and running out of hair. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. I’m fairly new to Blender and 3d so I might be missing something obvious. Using Blender 2.64, Cycles, WinXP, standard dell pc 3.25gb ram. Blender crashes immediatly I hit render for an image 6094 x 4724 px. Its for the cover of a folder that will go to press (ie not for screen).
516mm x 400mm @300dpi = 6094 x 4724 px

I tried ‘Save Buffers’, Blender didn’t crash, for 4 hours it appears to be rendering, indicating 1 to 64 tiles. After 4 hours the rendered image didn’t appear, and then Blender crashed. I hoped the tiles might have saved in C: mp\ (where Output is set to) but no, I couldn’t find any rendered tiles.

I read about this script: http://www.macouno.com/2010/03/18/really-big-render but its for Blender 2.47. I don’t mind stitching tiles in photoshop if anyone knows of a script for 2.64 or another way to output separate tiles.

You could try using more tiles. Chances are you need more RAM though. 6094x4724 is pretty huge, plus all textures and the BVH are stored in memory, plus whatever you have going on in the Blender UI, plus operating system, plus background processes. 3.25GB of RAM is pretty slim pickins at that point.

Tried this script: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Extensions:2.6/Py/Scripts/Render/Render_Regions
However it only worked for a normal resolution render. Blender crashed with my big image, I tried various numbers of tiles, regions, with/without buffers… Crashed every time.

This worked:
I think I have a solution that works on my low memory PC, so I’ll put this out there if anyone else has a computer as bad as mine but needs a very big image: Use the ‘Border’ function to render part of camera view, then stitch the parts in a photo editor such as photoshop. See info about ‘Border’ here: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Render/Output
1.) Render > Dimensions > tick: Border + Crop (Crop prevents black rectangle rendered around border)
2.) Select your border area: In Camera View > Shift+B > drag desired border area.
3.) Hit Render.

At least I can get on with my project now (phew!). If anyone knows a solution that will do the above automatically (without crashing on a low memory pc), I’d be really interested.
