Render Smoke without raytracing?

I went through a smoke tutorial and I have raytracing disabled by default in the Render properties. I could never get the smoke to show up in the Render.

So, I enabled raytracing and it shows up.

I also downloaded a blend from here where somebody did moving train smoke. It rendered fine until I turned off raytracing.

Is raytracing a necessary step for rendering the smoke?

I think you may have answered your own question

OK,
It’s just a little weird that no tutorial I have seen so far seems to mention this crucial fact.
