Render Tests and Fake AO

what exactly is fake ao and how is it done?

Photogen: AO is ambient occlusion, as you probably know. Which basically simulates GI (global illumination).
But since AO takes a long time to render, I’m trying to simulate its look using composite nodes.

I’ve found that fake AO can be achieved by placing a Buffer Shadow “classic-halfway” lamp with a bias of 0.001 and 16 samples and a low power hemi will cause a fake AO effect.

If by “hemi” you mean hemi light… isnt it CPU heavy?.. or was it Area light… hmm

No, hemis render really fast. Area lights with high samples are CPU heavy.

Hemi’s a global lights. They illuminate everything in a 180 Deg. Arc without casting a shadow. Using them at low intensity with a shadowed lamp makes a GI effect.
