Rendered result never has ligthing, subsurfing, etc. applied

Hello,

I am new to Blender (and 3D-modelling as well), but rather impressed by all the possibilites. However, one thing bugs me: if I create something with light, subsurfed surfaces etc., then it all looks great on the fly. But as soon as I hit F12 to render it, I only get the basic picture as it would look without all applied effects. Since everything looks fine in the modelling windows, it it probably some kind of global Blender setting ? But where do I find it ???

Even if I follow the Blender 2.3 Guide and exactly press all the buttons as shown in the quickstart lesson, my finally rendered picture does not look like the one displayed in the book.

I am using the latest version of Blender (2.37a).

Have I overlooked something ? :-?

Do you have an ATI card or old graphics card drivers? I’m not too familiar with this, however it has been known to cause problems. Plus, are you sure you have all the correct layers selected?

Do you have the value in red the same number as the one on the left?

Thank you thank you ! Incrementing the number in the red circle as shown in your screen shot solved the rendered subsurving problem

Haha, you’re definitely not the only one to make such a dumb mistake. I do it all the time! :stuck_out_tongue:
