Hi, I was just wondering if their was any intrest in a cheap/free rendering machine. I was wondering because I bought a new laptop, and when it comes, my desktop will then no longer have any use. So I figured “Hey, why not use it as a rendering machine? Perhaps make a few bucks off it… although unlikly” Mods, if this this thread is in violation of the rules, feel free to lock.
If any of you care, the machine is a 2.8 hypertherading P4 w/ 1 gb of ram and a 9800 videocard.
Save the old computer. You never know whne you need it again. For parts or as an emergency backup.
I am wondering. Is there a version of Blender for users who have a computer farm? There must be right? Wasn’t Elephants dream done on a computer that has multiple CPUs (like 200+ g5 proccessors).

Is that your old computer? Darn… I’ll keep alright…or you could pack it and send it to me lol.
You should keep it as a rendering machine and you can also still do many other things while working on your laptop.
I tend to use an older pc as a simple type of server. It would have my internet connection, admin (Open Office) etc. on it. That way I can keep my main workstation clean.
If I was you I should keep that computer. RIght now I have a 166mhz 16MBram pentium with 10gig HD running as a webserver included php, ftp server, teamspeak server, vnc server, with a connected printer for network printing and winamp broadcast radio when I need my own music from home, and sometimes it runs some Python network scripts I made.
It runs great, I share my files over FTP with friends, have it as a website testing machine and for oure game clan we have a nice VOIP chatbox.
Badly it can’t run MySQL, but maybe I’ll replace it someday with a Pentium 3 to be able to run a database server and add more space for saving files over network.
A old pc can be used very good. The one I told you about is just a little extreme old, but well it does it’s job really fine without problems. It runs windows 98 and it didn’t crash for like 2 years now, althought it gets a little dusty and have to turn it off 2 times a year to clean it. I had a pentium 4 that which MOBO died afther 4 years, but this little oldy is really a hardcore one, it runs even Firefox without problem to be able to search the net for information on GuildWars items while I play on my normal pc.
Good morning and all other greatings and thanks for the replys
The reason its an “old” computer, is becuase its two years old, I am going to get a laptop, and runs really hot. Good in winter, bad in summer. Its summer. And also I’m being made to sell this thing, unless I can convince my dad to let it be put to a better use. And its hard to run two servers on the same connection. My bro beat me to it, so now all my upload bandwidth is gone. But my real question is, would any of you guys use this machie for rendering(chances are it would be free untill a certan point[of time for render], or if I get swampted wiht rendering requests)? Or do all of you already have something that you guys use and I should just sell this thing?
While laptops are great – they’re quiet, they run cool, and they’re portable – they’re not Blender machines. I end of lifed a dual Opteron machine because the motherboard was garbage, and got a little Mac laptop. I love the laptop, but there’s no way that it’ll ever run Blender like the Opteron box.
I’m currently looking for a powerful PC workstation machine (preferably not too expensive), even one with a million fans that runs hot, so I can get my Blender fix. So keep that big old P4 box; you won’t regret it.
Eh, well, I decided that I would do it, atleast untill I sell my PC. If anybody wants me to render something for them, PM me, and as soon as my laptop gets here (Should be tommorow, but its still in a sorting center a day away, so I don’t know) I’l start it. If anbody does care to take advantage of this, please include:
Approx render time.
If unknown, thats ok, But this would be helpful.
Rendering Engine.
If you dont know this, well… ummm…
Version.
Again, look above.
Nodes.
Not sure if these are needed, so, I’l play it safe rather then find out too late.
Anythng else.
Obvious or not, please tell me.
Also, the machine, if you didn’t read above, is a 2.8 P4 hyperthreading w/ 1GB of ram and a 9800 videocard.
…
I’m running windows98, with a 600mhz celeron processor, a 16bit graphics card, and 192mb of ram…Oh yea…an 11gb hard drive(when it was fresh out of the box)…
You should run Blender on your “old” computer, and use your laptop for everything else…

I understand your pain. I used to have a little bit slower PC before.
I’m actually collecting old computers to start up a farm. I’ve got about 5 so far, never set up a cluster so it will be cool seeing them all fired up and rendering a scene. Kind of a stone soup setup like ORNL had, though on a much more limited scale.
I’ve thought about looking for a junky old computer at Goodwill or something to turn from a shitty Win95 box to a nice Linux PC. So far, I haven’t found much, but there’s a lot that I could do with such a setup.
