Rendering Diffuse and Normal

I have an object with a diffuse texture on it, and a normal map. The problem is that I can’t get both of them to show at the same time. The number of materials on the object show up as 2, but only the material in the 2nd position is shown when I render. So I either get only the diffuse, or only the normal. How do I get both rendering at the same time?

For now, I’m just rendering out a set of both, and combining them in photoshop, but it’s clearly a much more time consuming option than rendering them at the same time.
