Rendering footage in it's original size

Hello

I made some hand drawn footage, png images. I want to animate it using video sequence editor.
It should have an image background, say 800x600 pixels.

The footage is not of the same dimensions, it is less wide, maybe 400x500.

When I add background and footage on separate channels and specify render video, dimensions 800x600: background looks fine but the footage gets streched all over it.

Is there a way to render a footage in it’s original dimensions over a wider background?

Or perhaps is this a job for compositing?

Select the clip and press N to display its properties.
In the Strip Input section enable the ‘Image Offset’ tickbox. You can then change the position of the clip on the X and Y axes
