Rendering problem 2 frames at once.

Hello all,
I have a problem. I am relatively new to blender and I bought the mancandy faq and I have made a walk cycle. When I go to render it something weird happens. It renders a squashed image and then a second and them blends them together to make the picture attached. I am sure that is some simple setting but for the life of me I cant figure out what. I have read through everything I have (Witch is all the books that blender has out and every dvd except elephants dream)and can not find the answer. Can you tell me what is going on.

I am running it on a 2.4 quad with 3 gigs of ram
blender 2.46 and same thing has happened before on 2.45
dual boot vista home 32 bit and Ubuntu Linux 64bit and it has the same problem on both.

In the Render settings turn off the Fields button. It is down near the OSA filter setting. The Fields button is used to add Fields rendering for TV broadcast footage.
