Rendering problem

I have a scene that is rather small, consisting of 21 objects and a light+camera, but the resolution is super high. I have fifteen objects with subsurf modifiers set to render level 2 that are also smoothed. I have a plane consisting of one face (obviously), and five chess pieces with a glass shader attached. There is one other material in use, but many others in the scene (how do I delete?), if that will affect the render. Anyways, assuming I’m looking in the right place (top right corner), my vertex count is 235,225 and my face count is 228,593. As such, Blender crashes befor YAFRay can render the scene. I have a few ideas of how to fix this, but I don’t know how to put the ideas into effect. The first is to render the scene in bits and pieces, little tiles of the final image, over a few rendering sessions (is this doable?). The second is to reduce the poly count of objects, but I don’t know how. Is there a way to simplify objects? There might also be other ways to doing this, and if so, I’d like to hear.

plz post a pic. if u have a quarter million verts to model a toaster, its too much. if one of your objects is the insides of a swiss watch, its ok. we cant read your mind or see your scene unless you post it, so we cant tell if there is anything you can do to simplify. Plz be specific, what is super-high? 8,000 x 10,000 in 32 bit color depth for posters?

You can render the scene in parts by increasing the X and Y numeric fields under the Render button. I dont know if they translate through the xml to Yafray, but they reduce memory use in Blender Internal renderer.

Sorry, by resolution I meant mesh density, but I’m hoping to render a 1,000x1,000 image. Anyways, here are some photos: A non-rendered scene with subsurf and a rendered scene without th subsurf modifier. The subsurf is on the blood drops. Call me morbid, but when inspiration strikes… I thought it would be interesting  . Anyways, the scene I managed to render took almost 45 minutes and the app was bordering on a crash. Converting the NURBS blood drops to a mesh and subsurf-smoothing them pushed it over the edge. I should just reduce the mesh density of the pieces, since they average 20.4k faces apeice. Anyways, thanks for the quick reply.
