Rendering seems really slow

I have a decent laptop with 2 gigs of ram and an amd dual core 2.0ghz processor but rendering seems really slow, i have a simiple stage setup with 3 objects and 1 light with basic materials.

it takes about two minutes to render 1 frame is this normal or is there something limiting it?

With the set-up you describe it does seem a tad excessive at 2 minutes a frame but without a .blend file we can’t narrow down the million and one variables that could be affecting it.

here is the .blend

It rendered 2 min and 6 sec. on my pc.
specs: Pentium D 3.0 dual core, 512 mb ram and old geforce fx 5500

The materials aren’t so simple with Ray Transperancy on the blob and Ray Mirror on the plane, that’s what is adding to the render time (lots of raytracing calculations going on). Switching off those would slash the render to time to 1/3 of your original total.

Also, on your blend file you have Threads set at 1, as you’ve got a dual core you should set it to 2, at least, to render on both cores.
