renderlayers for dummies

So blender has this fancy thing called renderlayers, and I have no idea how to use it, or what it really does (I’ve read some basic stuff, and i have a first grade education so i can deduce it has something to do with rendering in layers).

I’d really appreciate it if someone could help me a little and give me an explanation and maybe a few applications.
