Renderman 21 Non-Commercial released today

Renderman 21 Non-Commercial is finally available for download. No Blender Plugin just yet, but exciting nonetheless.

There is an official addon, look here:https://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?375734-Pixar-RenderMan-for-Blender!

Yes, but the RenderMan 21 addon is not officially available yet. Renderman 20 though is supported.

I find it pretty amusing that Blender have full support whilst 3ds Max is not even on the radar to be supported officially.

I am looking forward for the new addon, always wanted to give RenderMan a try!

Me too. Unfortunately Maya doesn’t want to see the plugin and setting up RM in Houdini is a pain (if 21 is supported yet). I’ll troubleshoot later…

The add-on is available and was already before de NC release, selecting the devel-21 branch in github. Now it’s already in master branch, so download the zip from this link and install the add-on: https://github.com/bsavery/PRMan-for-Blender

Oh, btw, there’s no need to install Renderman for maya anymore, “It” (the image tool) comes with Renderman pro server now.

You should also check Brian Savery’s youtube channel to see some of the new features in Renderman and Renderman for Blender (like support for Cycles nodes!): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCB62W_g5ABmKNl5UrRmxweA

Nice! Been waiting for this.

I did need Renderman for Maya because a lot of what I do involves volumes and vdb, which Renderman 20 for Blender didn’t support AFAIK. VDB is supposed to be supported in Renderman 21 for Blender.

I pretty much only use Maya as a front end for RenderMan, and I thoroughly hate using it. RenderMan for Houdini is another option, but as far as I know I cannot write RIBs from Indie to farm out and it’s kind of a pain to set up. I’m sure there must be some way to set up a template or shelf tool to get things up and running faster, but I haven’t had time to look into it.

Unfortunately no, the OpenVDB reader is not in 21, yet. It’s being worked on though…

That’s great. I’d really like to get Maya out of my life

It’s a simple addition. File a feature request on the github page and I’ll get to it later this week or someone else will.

Are the Material Presets being worked on for Blender? Or is that something we as the community should pitch in and help with?

Coming soon… I made a prototype of it working, but to get the same UI as RenderMan for Maya we really need PyQT or Pyside…

I’m not sure about how it is in Maya, but there are plenty of Material Libraries for Blender that could be used as a reference. What features are missing for you?

We have a UI and backend for reading the json files which store the presets written unfortunately that UI is written using PyQT. Which IMHO is much better than the Blender UI but that’s an argument for another time.

I actually wrote a simple UI using the blender code, some things that are missing are a good way to display a tree of directory structures mainly.

A discussion for another time/place. But just curious. What is involved in converting Blender UI to PyQT and what would the overall benefits be?

Feel free to post that in another thread or start one, share a link. I am very curious.

Where should we add feature requests and bug reports, here on Renderman forum?

renderman forum or github

Holy smokes it’s FAST.
