i rendered the scene last night and it worked fine. opened the project today and it will only render a black screen. im pretty new so is there any troubleshooting techniques i should know for this?

It could be many things so attach your blend file so other users don’t have to guess which one is the cause.
I ran into a similar problem yesterday. My issue was I went into the video sequence editor and rendered a sequence. After you do that and you want to render another “still” you have to un-check sequencer in the render settings.
