repeating uvtexture for export

How do I create a repeating uv texture for an object to be exported? I am using either .obj or .x

As you can see, there is nothing there that helps me with my problem.
At the moment, I am simply scaling my uv coordinates much larger than the actual image. Is this the correct way?
