This is a 3D reconstruction from the painting ‘The Man With The Golden Helmet’ orginally attributed to Rembrandt but later corrected to originate from one of his students.
The challenge was to take a 2D painting and try to reconstruct as good as possible a 3D representation.
Ahh, so close. The render is really very good. There are to me only 2 things that distract from perfection. The right eye seems not to fit the mesh correctly. The lack of eyelashes.
Anyway Great work.
m.a.
Yes, the eyelashes are omitted on purpose, as they are missing from the original as well. The problem with the right eye is a long story, and in the end I decided to leave it as you see it now for the sake of my sanity
Wow, awesome.
It might have added a little something to bake the texture of the helmet, just to add a little grit in to the grooves. You could also use the baked map to create a specular mask to make it shine more in the raised areas.
I’m not suggesting a heavy duty baked approach, but sometimes if done subtly these sort of effects can add greatly to the realism of materials.
Looks nice. Regarding the hair, I suggest you still lower the alpha value - would make them blend in more. Right now it looks sorta tacked on, if you will. As for the modeling, it’s great, but the area around the eyes could be improved. Oh, and there seems to be some stretching in the texture on the nose.
Unfortunately I used a makehuman generated mesh as base mesh for the head. That turned out to be a suboptimal solution for scultping. Also the generated UV map is not really good, hence the stretching around the nose. As already stated in the wip, next time I will model the head all by myself.
