Request for help with error message after installing blender

Hello everyone,

I have a problem I am really hoping someone can help me out with.

After I installed Blender 2.37a, I received an error message related to the video card Glide driver “Glide3x.DLL”. The Blender program will not run, or close, and I then have to restart the computer to remove the partially loaded blender window. My graphics accelerator has a slider with four notches ranging from “none” to “full”. When I set the graphics accelerator to the second notch (one notch above “none”) Blender seems to load and run fine.

However, when the graphics accelerator is set to “full”, I get an error message and blender will not run. Uninstalling and re-installing the program does not help. I have also installed the latest video card drivers specific to my computer, direct from www.gateway.com

I have listed the full error message below, along with the specs on my graphics card and drivers, and some of my computer specs.

I was told that my graphics card is old, and since it is only 16MB, that I need to upgrade the video card to one having at least 32MB of memory. Gateway said that the “Jaton Video” part # 117PCI-32 would work on my computer and I had one guy tell me this should solve my problem. I am having the exact same problem with two other softwares.

I would like to ask if you feel that a new video card would solve the problem, and/or if you feel the problem may be solved via some other means. This is an older computer running Windows 98 and I don’t want to put much money into it. If theres some way to solve the problem without insalling a new video card, I would like to give it a try.

Also, how will running the Blender program with my graphics acceleration set to one notch above “none” effect the quality of renderings or animations ?

If I go to “control panel” display, settings, advanced, 3dxf Voodoo Banshee AGP, I then have three selection choices via putting a check or dot in “desktop”, “open GL”, or “Direct 3d”. The system seems to be defaulted to “desktop” and It will not stay changed when I try to select “open GL” or “direct 3D”.

Please let me thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
John

hi,

i am not a pro in this domain. but if you’re computer is running win98, it seems to be a little bit old.

graphic cards do not alter the quality of renders/animation. I was wondering about it last week and people told me that blender only relies on CPU and RAM for render.

Only thing is, if your graphic card is too old, it might be difficult to work on it (speed during modelling). Then, if you’re computer is old, then it has most likely old cpu and old ram, so it might take forever to render.

You might want to try some things on this computer. My personal advice would be to save money for a new system.

Hi Soriyath,

Thanks for your reply. A new computer system is not possible, right at this moment.

If I set the graphics acceleration to one notch above “none” it seems to render quickly, and everything seems to work fine. However, when the graphics acceleration is set to full, Blender will not even run.

I had always thought that graphics acceleration effected the quality of renderings and animations. If setting my acceleration to one notch above none will not effect the quality of renderings or animation, then I can do that and run the program, but I would still like to fix this if I can, so I can run the Graphics acceleration on full like I always have. Not having it on full does seem to decrease the quality of MPEG movies.

Thanks again, hopefully someone may have an idea of something I can try to get it working right.

John

that’s quite an antique. It is a bit weird you’d have crasing related issues with it, but I would not expect it to work nicely with blender [the voodoo cards [while nice for the time] don’t have many features of opengl implemented, this shouldn’t be a problem for blender [I have a machine with a voodoo 3 2000 that ran blender reasonably … in linux]]

first try switching to 16 bit color mode…

if that doesn’t work consider buying a new nvidia graphics card, like a geforce 2 [or 4mx or 4000] for like US$40. Hardly top of the line [and hardly expensive] but they run blender quite well.

in the shorter term turning your hardware acceleration all the way down should stop it from crashing, but it’s hardly a resonable workaround [in my opinion]

EDIT: setting the hardware acceleration to none [or just above it] doesn’t change how blender renders at all, it will however make the interface slower [particularly if you have a really detailed scene]

Hey everyone,

I just used the upgrade sales chat feature at www.gateway.com. They said that these are my options as far as video cards that will work with my computer.

ATI RADEON® 9250 256MB PCI
costs $128.99 plus $7.50 for shipping plus any applicable taxes.

Jaton MX400/TV-OUT/PCI/64MB DDR costs $45.95 plus $7.50 for shipping plus any applicable taxes.

Jaton MX400/PCI/32MB DDR
costs $35.95 shipping and aplpicable taxes is not yet included.

They said the MX400/PCI/32MB DDR was better than the 117PCI-32 that they recommended before.

I think I will shop around and go with the MX400/TV-OUT/PCI/64MB DDR. It’s got 64MB of memory and should be a good improvement over the old 16MB 3dfx card I have now. I may be able to find a good deal online, and it seems a reasonable upgrade for an older computer, pricewise.

Thanks again for the feedback you guys gave, I appreciate your help.

John

good idea.

the mx400 is plenty fast for blender.

Hi everyone,

I don’t know if this is related to the video card or not, but when I open blender with the graphics acceleration one setting above “none”, there is also a MS-DOS type of window that opens with blender. The window says…

"Using Python, Version 2.3
‘Import site’ failed; use -v for traceback

No installed python found.

Only built-in modules are available. Some scripts may not run

Continuing Happily. "

I have been using the “Newb to pro tutorial”. It says that when in edit mode, I can select a single vertex by right clicking over it. However, I cannot seem to select a single vertex via this method. I can however, select two vertex along an edge of a cube, by hitting Alt and right clicking with my mouse. Hitting the “A” key selects all or no vertex, and this seems to work fine, but I cannot seem to select only a single vertex.

Does this sound like it’s related to the video card too, or does it sound like I have other problems.

Is my computer just too old and slow for blender ? It’ looks like such a neat program, I was really hoping to get it going.

Thanks
John

The DOS window is part of Blender. The message just means that you don’t have Python installed on your system, so Blender is using its own (simplified) Python interpreter instead.

The selection problem does indeed sound like a problem with your video card. As noted above, your current card is lacking some OpenGL powers, and selection is accomplished via OpenGL.

If you cannot get an improved OpenGL driver for your card, you’ll definitely have to upgrade the video hardware.

Good luck.

[UPDATE]

Hi everyone,

I put a new Jaton MX400/TV-OUT/PCI/64MB DDR video card in, and Blender is now working fine at full graphics acceleration. The problem I had with selecting one vertex is also now gone.

Installing the drivers became somewhat of a nightmare, The first time I installed the drivers, when I tried to get to display properties to adjust screen resolution, I got an error related to the desk.cpl file. However, after a long process, I was able to get everything working fine.

Thanks again for your help everyone, I really appreciate it.

Sincerely,
John
