This is for a head targeting/eye targeting rig. I want to set it up so that the targets are parented to the character rig’s hip bone, in position, in front.
I would like to be able to reset location and rotation to that parented position. But of course alt+G will send the targets to world origin.
I’m assuming there’s a simple way to do this? Any advice is welcome. Thanks.
For anything like this, I prefer using bones, because bones can have easily tuned “inverses”-- when you alt-g a bone, it goes to its rest postion, not the world origin. If you really want an empty at the location of a bone, you can copy transforms/location of that bone or you can parent the empty to that bone.
However, it’s not impossible to set up alt-G to restore to a specific location by using deltas. Place your object where you want its “rest” position to be, then ctrl-a “apply location to delta”.
Then, move it, and alt-g it, and notice that it returns to wherever you put it when you applied location as delta.
Deltas are weird though. I’d still rather use bones.
Apply to deltas isn’t in my apply pie menu but there it is in the Object menu! So this might be a lesson in not assuming everything is in the Pie menu.
I don’t personally do pie menus, and I don’t do industry standard keymapping, so whenever I offer a way to get there, it might not be right for everyone-- that’s the price of a forked UI. (One of the prices.) But, I do take reasonable efforts to use the exact wording of the operation so that you can find it. Glad to hear you’re all set up.
