Resistance is Futile - Lux version

Here is a work in progress that I’ve been working on at lunch while at work. I am a chemist for a global paint supplier. I need to measure the resistivity of my products to ensure that they will not allow electrical flow, otherwise there could be a fire. One of my products starts off okay and then doesn’t resist any more after it has been shipped to the customer. We’ve had this problem for years. It is very frustrating.

The phrase “Resistance is Futile” in a borg voice goes through my head when these problems arise.

Modeled in Blender 2.44 and rendered in Lux weekly Windows Build for November 10th. THIS IS A ONE HOUR, UNBIASED RENDER!. The speed of Lux is really coming along nicely.

I still want to add some more texture / dirt maps to the meter, probe (chrome thing to the right), cap and label. They are working on resolving the dark glass issue with Lux for the 0.6 release. I’ll post an update after I get some of those additions added.


I still need to add some minor texturing on several areas, but then it will be completed.

Looking good, but I would recompose the shot so that it looks more like a still life photo and less like a studio shot focused specifically on the bottle. Perhaps put the objects on a table in a lab instead of a blue background as well.

The texture work on the label is very good to my eye, but it makes the glass jar itself and the lid look too clean and perfect in comparison.

I have the lid to take home tonight to study and create the bump map. It is a very smooth plastic, but there is a very, VERY fine bump that will break up the specular highlights on the edge of the lid. The glass bottle will have graduations on the left side and a slight texture over the whole thing to give the transparency some variation.

I have framed the bottle in such a way as to focus on the phase itself. My original compositions had everything setup more like a still life, and it was fine. This time I wanted to really focus in on the bottle.

Eventually it will be on a lab bench setting with many other items that I have modeled over the past.

Is there something about this post that makes it not worth commenting about? I am surprised by the number of views and so few comments.

Perhaps its the pigment which is conductive, not the base fluid.

Actually, it’s a pure solvent blend with no pigments. Any contamination from atmospheric moisture or other polar solvents quickly drop the value.

How did you get the RGB dispersion in the fluid? Is this a LuxRender special or did you do it another way? HDRI perhaps? I like the way this is coming along though, could do with a more interesting environment, though. Not necessarily like a workbench or anything “real lifey” but something other than plain blue. I like the depth of field blur, though, keep blending!

I just used a Glass material in the Luxblend script. I then chose the Benzene IOR preset and then used dispersion refraction. I then used a cauchy b of 0.004. The dispersion is what gives the neat RGB dispersion.
