Does the GPL allow me to sell copies of the program for money?
Yes, the GPL allows everyone to do this. The right to sell copies is part of the definition of free software. Except in one special situation, there is no limit on what price you can charge. (The one exception is the required written offer to provide source code that must accompany binary-only release.)
There is nothing wrong with what they’re doing, and that’s from the people that wrote the license.

In fact, as the owner of the code, they don’t have to provide the source… Of course, this would be silly, and would negate any reason for calling it ‘open source’ and using the GPL in the first place.
It’s quite common for companies to work on the product in-house for a while before releasing a clean, working version as open source.
And it’s perfectly fine to release the code as GPL and charge for pre-compiled binaries and/or support, too.
People like to confuse “free” (in the sense of the GPL) with “available at no charge”. You (as an author of the software) don’t have the obligation to make your software available publicly at all, instead you can make it accessible to your customers for a fee. However, you then cannot prevent your customers from doing the same, or from redistributing it at no charge.
In both cases, people are required to provide the source code alongside the binaries, or offer to provide it by physical mail at request.
But you cannot have it both ways, and frankly my personal preference would be that you close-source this add-on rather than trying to obfuscate whether it is actually freely available or not.
You can’t provide closed-source addons for Blender. Anything that touches the Blender API must be free software.
If you license the copies under the terms of the GPL, you do.
This is my understanding as well and is exactly what we’re doing. We are developing Contours as a product, allowing us to actually make it sustainable and push the development further than otherwise would be possible. But it’s a product with no limitations on what you can do with it. To me this is the beauty of GPL. It’s free as in freedom.
have you decided if polystrips etc. is all going to be part of the same package, or is it a separate “product”
It’ll likely be added as part of the same package so that the two can more easily work together.
The opinions in my post were just that, opinions. Let me just say that the add-on looks great, and people will more than likely pay for it or donate to it.
Zalamander said the same thing I did in my original post, namely that GPL says you just have to offer to provide the source code at no gain to yourself, GPLv2 doesn’t require you to provide it from your web page, though almost every piece of GPL’ed software I use do it this way and is thus my personal expectation and preference.

That’s simply not an accurate statement by itself. The “no personal gain” clause only applies if you distribute binaries without accompanying source code. The reasoning behind it is that there must be some way to obtain the source code for a “free” program.
Since the addon in question is in non-obfuscated source code form, that point is moot anyway. You can still charge anything you want for just the source code. BlenderCookie does not have to provide free and public access, at all. So please, consider the public github access a privilige, not a right.
It might make no sense to do so, but you can do it.
The GPL doesn’t take away the original developer’s rights. As the creator of the code, you can still do anything with it that you want to. This is why people can dual-license code under GPL and BSD, for example. Or in the case, charge for pre-compiled binaries and support.
You can’t license to somebody a program under the GPL and then not provide the source. You’d be violating the licensing terms you yourself set forth. Of course, you can license your program under multiple different licenses, but you still have to follow each and every one, respectively.
I re-read the GPL and stand corrected.
Its interesting to note that nothing is really gained by restricting the access though, since anyone who payed for it can redistribute it without limit since the application and its source code is one and the same.
Anyhow, this topic has been derailed, looking forward to where development on this goes.

Have you upgraded to version 1.0.0? It shouldn’t switch to perspective mode on Enter anymore.
Have you guys considered donations? I don’t currently need this plugin (I use 3dcoat for my retopology), but am always interested in kicking in a few euros, especially considering this will be added to Blender eventually.
Also, is there a demo? As I said I use 3dcoat, but I’d love to noodle around with this, even if its time-limited or whatever…
There’s no demo but the wonderful people at CGCookie made a public git repo available. The addon is GPL so you can just grab the latest release and then decide if you want to pay or not.
