A few months back, I purchased “SimCity 3000” for the PC (I think it’s exclusive so it makes sense). I earn it and soon find that it doesn’t work very well on my dad’s computer. So I want to return it. The problem is, Target will only give you another copy. I’m sure it’s a hardware problem, though. (And since that one was fixed up, it was repaired. And now that it’s crashed, it needs to get repaired again.)
Today, I made my parents drive me halfway across town to purchase the “Grand Theft Auto” collection for the PlayStation. This time, some scratches underneath the disc won’t allow the first “Grand Theft Auto” to play, and that was half the reason I bought it. The other half, “GTA: London,” needs that disc to play, so I’m sure it wouldn’t work. There are 3 discs in the collection, and the other one, “GTA2,” is one I already own on the PC… and it looks, sounds, controls and probably even tastes much better. It even cost less. So now I want to return it. However, store policy at Best Buy is the same damn thing as Target: They won’t refund money for something I’ve used.
Why am I posting this? To rant a little. It starts here. Now, how stupid is this whole return policy? In my opinion, extremely stupid. The “GTA” collection has turned me off, and now I want “Final Fantasy Tactics,” which is half the price, as well as maybe “Tony Hawk 3.” But no, they think you want the same product if you’ve opened it. Stupid. What, so are supposed to use our psychic powers to sense whether there’s a bug and then return it? No, we don’t have psychic powers that allow us to see bugs, so we have to use the dang thing. If it’s a software defect, especially for something like a PlayStation game, you can’t exactly fix it with another copy, or some patch to fix it. So I want my money back on both–$40. (Okay, so it’s more like my parent’s money, but it’s still technically to spend on me.) Should we really allow a company to rip us off like that? No, and that’s why I want my damn money back!
yeah, shops are often very dodgy about taking back software. normally there is a 24 hour return policy though. I have done it before. I didn’t get my money back, but i could spend it on anything else in that shop, which isn’t a bad deal…
I bought Roller Coaster Tycoon a few years ago at Staples, and the person said “If you find any problems, you can just return the unopened package”. And thinking that she was just brain dead (she was blonde, so…), I went home to play it. I was looking over my receipt, and in fine print at the bottom it said “Returns on hardware and software will not be accepted if the package is opened”. Sure, the game worked fine, maybe it still does, I don’t know, I’d have to install it again, but that return thing really pissed me off… Maybe the owner of Staples was blonde…
the reason for this is people copying games or software useing the serial code if there is one then returning it.
people do it and shops then can sell that software 1st hand (policies).
my advice if you have all the specs and it still doesnt work on you machine arguee for store credit. and always always check to see if secound hand software has scratches on it make them run it infront of you if your worried about it.
I had the specs, but my server took away so much memory I couldn’t run it…
CubeFan, if the problem is scratches, why don’t you just get another copy?
Anyway… I managed to get in-store credit for it…
My advice: Open the box carefully(if it doesn’t have plastic wrap) and re-seal it if you need to return it. I did that, and they wouldn’t have known it if i didn’t say i did.
