It’s World Rhino Day today, and to celebrate we are releasing something that I’ve been working hard on for the past few months. This opportunity was made possible through Digital Life and the Perth Zoo.
Bakari is a Southern White Rhino at the Perth Zoo in Australia. Duncan Irschick was on-site using his BeastCam rig to perform the initial scanning. The images were then handed off to me for processing (COLMAP and Meshlab), then cleaned up and the mesh made animatable via Blender. A few months were spent on the process, working with the Perth Zoo to receive additional reference images and video for areas that did not come out in the scan. Piecing together a living puzzle.
Checkout the model in 3D via Sketchfab, in your browser, or via AR and VR. Also, the model can be downloaded and used for non-commercial purposes.
