Rig problems for Plasticine style model

Hi all … this is my first post so be gentle.

I’m fairly new to blender using v2.72 and i’ve come into a problem with my first real project.

meet Mungo

He is a model I am wanting to animate or at least pose … i’ve followed a few tutorials about rigging and I always end up with the model not deforming correctly ie… the arms distorting the body heavily.

also i’ve had a problem with the mesh deforming in the 3d viewer when I use automatic weights (maybe its due to the heavy build of the model) before I even touch anything…

so…

What am i doing wrong?

or

do you awesome guys and girls know of any tutorials for models like Mungo?

Regards

James

Select the mesh, change to weight painting mode, select the bone and correct the weighting

I’ve done this infact spent a whole evening on it … and it still distorts and the auto weight is massively wrong which is why I wondered if it was the rig? bones size/type/placement or something.
