Rigging a hand

I was using this tutorial to rig a hand. How do I parent the end of the IK bones to the Hand.R bone? I only know how to do it if I select the whole bone, but this transfers the bottom “connection” to Hand.R, making it larger and destroying the finger rigging. I’m using Blender 2.49b. Thanks!

parent without connecting:
select childbone (IK target)
select parent bone (hand.R)
CRL+P (keep offset)
