Rigging, IK and weight painting order

IK seems to do all sorts of funny things to the rig/character, so is it possible to do the rig without IK, weight paint it, and then put all the IK and constraints? Or must all be in order: rig, IK and constraints, and weight painting?

My hand rig is giving me all sorts of problems, deforming everything and stuff, so I’m worried that it won’t work after doing all the tedious weight painting, so I was just thinking of doing the rig again, as it doesn’t take long, weight paint it easily thanks to the lack of weird deformations, and then put IKs and constraints.
