Rigify error - adding bones just doesnt work

Not sure why this happens. I have used rigify (usually just hand rig from stratch looks like it back to that method) - i have created a rig and parented all meshes. When i go into edit and add bones on top of basic skeleton as i have alot of meshes to bind it just isnt working - i am painting the weights but it literally doesnt affect the mesh at all… any ideas?

I have also tried the samples to add chains etc… but I’m just getting pink bones.

I don’t think rigify is much cop unless you are creating a very basic character… just cannot finds way to add extra bones without errors

have you checked whether your defrorm bones have the deform flag? (the deformation bones in rigify are usually hidden, but you can single out the DEF bonelayer like so

How and where are you adding the bones. If you want any new bones to work with and behave like the rest of the Rigify setup, then ideally you add them to the metarig.

Which means naming them much the same as the current metarig ones, have them on the correct layer and assigning them a Rigify Type.

For example, in the image below I added the selected bones on the metarig around the eye to act as extra controls for eyelashes.

Then when I generate the rig I get extra deform bones and controls to parent and weight paint.
