Rigify Fail!

I’m trying to rig a character in Rigify, and I’ve followed three different tutorials but keep coming up with the same error. At the point where I select the mesh, then select rig, hit ctrl-P, automatic weights, I get an error that says Rigify couldn’t find a solution for one or more bones.

Is there any way to tell WHICH bones Rigify doesn’t like? And once I do, what do I do about them?

Usually the problem is with the mesh and not the armature. Error messages can be a bit misleading.

"I know 2 situations where this problem raises:

When the Object consists of 2 or more separated (not connected) meshes which intersect. This could be solved by fixing the mesh topology, like connecting the intersecting meshes into one single mesh and by fixing your model to avoid the intersecting areas.
When the object has duplicate vertices. This can be solved by removing doubles in Edit Mode ( keyboard shortcut "W" -> Remove Doubles)

I do not know the exact reason why the algorithm fails in these cases and if there are other cases as well where it fails. However it must be related to ambiguities while calculating the weight ratios for the involved vertices."

Edit: Oh wow, the automatic formating on quotes is pretty trash, I’d suggest you look at the first answer in link.

Thanks. I think you put me on the right track- it’s probably that the model has a separate hair mesh. Is it better to combine the meshes or just remove the hair for the rigging and put it back on later?

Edit: Quoting is a little wonky…

I’d separate it. Then manually just add it to the head bone vertex group with 100% weight.

I find the best workflow to be to do automatic weight paints and manual painting on the biggest continuous part of the character (usually the base body mesh) and then add accessories and other smaller parts to it with projected weights, automatic or manual weights.

Thank you.

Sadly, I just imported an obj figure with no hair or separate parts, applied the basic metarig, adjusted it, created the rig, and tried to ctrl-P it to attach to the mesh with automatic weights, and the same thing happens: Rigify failed to find a solution for one or more bones. Is there any way to figure out which bones are the problem?

Any chance you can share the file?

I’ll check after dinner. I may have overwritten it, trying different things.

I had overwritten it, so I started again from importing an OBJ figure. Same result- Rigify can’t figure out one or more bones. I’ll see if I can attach that blend file here.

It won’t let me- file too big. Sheesh.

Just make sure you have nothing but the mesh in the file. Delete all materials etc. Should be small enough then.
