Rigify only with the use of meta-rig supporting it?Can create your own skeleton, then use rigify to create control objects?
I guess you could create your own armature, then on a different layer generate a rigify, then use the control bone shapes it creates with your armature, but it seems to me that it would be easier to just create your own control bone shapes.
the meta rig is actually made of a number of rig components (arm, leg etc) that rigify knows how to turn into full rigs.
you can access a list of these components separately under object data (the little stick figure on the properties window) when in edit mode.
You can then make whatever you want, provided you use only these rig components.

I’ve used it that way, just having it generate limbs and doing the body rig from scratch. It can take a few tries to get everything just the way you want it, but it’s very flexible.
