How can you make a ring? Like a cylinder without an inside.

are you talking a wedding ering or s skatring or a torus ?

Just like a wedding ring.

make a cylinder
delete the center spoke vertices
select everything
extrude
scale it in or out.

If you need the commands to do each of those things I would suggest finding a keyboard map for blender. (I didn’t include it because I don’t have blender on the machine I’m at and don’t want to give you a wrong command. I remember keys by the tactile movement of my hand, not by the letter it is, sorry.)

Could anybody else tell me the command for ‘extruding’ and ‘scaling in or out’?

Scaling is done with the “S” key. once you start the scale try hitting the “X” “Y” and “Z” keys to restrict the scale direction, holding “shift” while pressing any of those will restrict it from that axis.

Extrude is done with the “E” key. a handy trick that I use a lot with this is to extrude, then don’t move it anywhere by right-clicking, then use “ALT” + “S” to scale along the normals.

Hope that is helpful, but I really would suggest going through a few of the begginer tutorials that can be found around the web, here at BA.org is a great place for them, as well as Blender.org has a list of a lot good ones, and now Blendernation.com has a link page to lots of tutorials.

I have also used the font object. Simply type the letter “o”. The font object has built in extrude and bevel commands from the interface so you can experiment a lot easier.
