Risky Hike

Hey all,
I created this scene for a new Cliffs tutorial on Blender Guru.

Created with Blender and Cycles. Wave splashes and minor post-pro in Photoshop.

It was inspired by the sights of Korea and Australia

I’ve attempted to create cliffs in the past, but always failed. So I did a few experiments over the last few days and finally got the knack of it.

I’ve also been sketching human poses in my free time, so I decided to have a go at adding one to the scene. I hope to do a full character tutorial some day in the future

Looks superb Andrew, I look forward to seeing the tutorial. But seeing as you are a ‘pro’ I do feel compelled to find at least one critsizm :stuck_out_tongue:

The water nearest to camera looks too smooth, looking at it, I would expect more foam. But really, this is a nice piece, lighting and composition is top drawer!

Yep awesome stuff Andrew:P I watched the tut and learned a few things like I’m just going to have to get crazy bump:) I have the same comment regarding the water waves. You could totally get away with keeping the same amount of foam and splash but decreasing the water displacement by 60 or 70% making the ripples much smaller which based on your cliff and hiker above would be about right:) Great lighting though man…really:P

Simply extraordinary Mr. Andrew  You did it again!
Awesome stuff. Composition, and lighting are truly touching. - the final touch with the guy crossing the bridge is nice as well.
To see pictures like this… is always making my day.

Edit: I with Derek agree, the waves could use a smaller scale… but I think it would have taken too much memory…

I`m watching the tut right now.

PS: I~ll do my homework. Look for it on the finished projects in a couple of days.

Hey, I finished watching the tutorial. Great stuff! Nice tip with the grass color blending towards the tip. The only thing I think you missed is that you didn`t add any glossy to your grass… is that intentional?
Btw… I noticed some repetition to the voice in the vid …
Anyways… Nice tutorial and story at the end lol. Thanks.

Incredible!

The sizes of the objects seem disproportional. Everything looks kinda toy-like because of that waves. I don’t think that waves can do that splashes. the water is so clear i can see the bottom very far from the shore. The grass on the rocks is big (high and thick) so the trees look like small bushes on this grass. Should the sizes be corrected it maybe will look excellent.

I agree with everyone’s mention about the water/waves as well, and I partially agree with your comments about the grass… but I have to disagree slightly. Given the location of the vegetation, I would argue that the length of the grass is okay, as well as the scale of the trees, however I would agree that the grass appears too thick. Typically, wild grass can grow to pretty extreme heights when it is not maintained, for example on the side of a cliff, as well as trees tend to be stunted due to soil erosion and lack of a nutrients from growing out of crevices within a rock face. This might make the scale seem odd, but I think the scale is typical of what you would see in such a location. I quickly googled some images to illustrate what I am picturing.
