Robot - A worker one

Hi there.

just a model i build in Sketchup. Now i will retopo in Blender for some cool textures, and beveled corners :RocknRoll: Hopefully i will end it soon.

No plans as i build it, so something may seen just boring.

First render is just a straight import in blender, without any work (yet)

Looks like an interesting robot. It’s hard to tell what it’s supposed to do. The prongs at the front look like they could be for grabbing or attaching a missing part. If they are for grabbing I would add some visual cues to the tips (ribbed rubber grip pads for instance). The ends of the prongs also look like they need to be “set smooth”, you can use an edge-split modifier to define which edges you want sharp and which smooth.

It would benefit from textures - where you can add in detailing like bolts and screws (or you can model them if you want to go high poly). And good spec and bump maps to give it the look you are going for.

Also, why model in sketch up when you have Blender? Personal preference I guess, so whateves.

great tip on the rubber pads  thanks

will texture, and remodel it, for sure. Already working on it. About using SU, well, its damn easy and really fast to model some things there. I use it as a base for some blender stuff. But i model a lot in blender :eyebrowlift:

would love to render it in a nice engine (yafaray or lux), but im on a mac and lux only works on 10.6, and yaf on blender 2.49, wich is slow as hell on my macbook :frowning:

A few things that stand out to me - first off the “arms” are abit strange. It’s hard to tell if the two rows of “fingers” can move independently (to crush or “pinch” objects) or if they are fixed, like a forklift. If it’s based off of a forklift, I would say just let there be one row, the bottom. Unless you make some super sweet crates that only this particular setup can lift, in which case including such crates would be neat. If the fingers can pinch or crush they need parts that tell us they move, like over sized bearings, hydraulics or springs.

Another thing that stands out quite a bit are the ankles, they look about ready to snap! the cab, arms and knees are all extremely large and boxy, so the ankles should be similar. Look at the ankles on this image for some inspiration.

Other than that this is a neat industrial bot, give it a background of a dock or large factory and some stuff to move around and it’ll look pretty cool

Absolutely agree with QS Dragon - DETAILS. Otherwise - not a bad start.
