Robot painting with a cycles maquette

Hi all.
Just a WIP of a technique I thought I’d try out.

From a sketch I made during a meeting  I took a photo with my iphone…

From there I made a REALLY simple maquette in cycles trying out different HDRI and lighting. I spent no more than ten minutes building this with simple spheres and geo…

Then I moved over to Inkscape and began tracing the simple line drawing while taking colour from the cycles render. This is all vector. All the shading is dome in Inkscape. The nice thing is that the character retains the quirky broken perspective of my sketch but has an okay sense of lighting.

Still a long way to go. I hope I stay interested enough to finish it

lovely! Really really great!

really, really great and interesting  I will follow this one

Here is WIP number 2.
Still lots of details and indecision to go.

Lovely stuff!

That is way cool, love the vector portions that don’t try to be 3d, yet give a great feel to it as well! Looks good enough to be a possible character in Incredibles 2 I think

An update. Close to losing interest so I guess that means I’m nearly finished

glenn.

awesome!
i’m loving the character design…I like how you’re presenting it too

I feel like a floor shadow is needed, but I don’t know if that’d break the style you’re going for

I really like how you have presented the piece and the background

I put a floor in and took it out and put it in

Here is another WIP. This time, as you can see by the process image below it, I begin with a sketch, then create a maquette in cycles, and in Inkscape crate a layer per light source which gets added together in a final image. This one has quite a way to go.

pew pew pew wip2

Wow! Nice way to design characters.
You really know how to use vectors and Inkscape!

Thanks.

Because I created each light’s contribution on a separate vector layer (see below) I can tweak the colour of the final comp easily.

I love that laser and the light glows

Hi,

Very nice picture ! i like the way you mixed blender and inkscape to get
this cartoon style image.

instant -> ‘C:…\Inspiration’, great stuff. How did you create the “rimlight” layer? Is that multiple ellipses blurred together, or somehow one magic gradient?

Looks like you lost his legs on that last one, but the breakdown is really cool

Love the proportions of your robots !! The first one is really cute !! :=)

Everything is just gradients clipped by larger shapes…
