I would probabley go for a particle system rather than a smoke sim (maybe due to my old hardware!),
I find particles much faster and more controlable, it is also very easy to have the emmitter folow a path and leave a trail as the particles will “linger” leaving a trail. There are many parameters to control their initial velocity, lifetime size etc etc.
