My first attempt to create human face.
Don’t mind about the skin yet, I haven’t put any effort it yet. Just so the skin color is about right.
Its far from finished, but I would like to hear your opinions about the anatomy.
I prolly won’t going to animate or even rig this, but I still wanted to practice retopo, and what I found out was it’s pretty hard. Especially the ears!
Do you have to recommend some addons to retopo or some other tricks.
All the comments about topology and how to improve it would be highly appreciated. Ear isn’t merged to head yet since I’m not quite sure what is the best method to do it.
Adding subdiv and shrinkwrap modifier to it and it looks pretty reasonable.
For the first attempt he really looks human!!! the retopo also looks promising if also is your first time.
I can see that you did not use much references… and that is something I think everybody do at the very start of this journey, but don’t do it! just use references!!! Your proportions are really really good, but the shapes not so much, look hard to the references!
it’s a good start, but you try to add detail before finishing the main forms.Establish main forms 1st,clean,verification of proportions,if good go to next phase.Try to find a skull obj and put it under the head to test proportions and shape.
Thanks Tonatiuh.
First of all, you did hit the bull’s-eye there! I only used references every here and there to check something when my memory failed. I know I should use them a lot, so not sure why I didn’t bother to put more attention to those.
I’m happy with the proportions too, I mean considering this was just suppose to be a test how sculpting in blender works so I just started to sculpt without any guidance lines or anything.
I’ll try to improve shapes.
You Doisy Didier also have a neat point. I gotta admit that I kinda lost track of my intention. I have fairly new wacom tablet and sculpting first time with that was too much fun and started to add unnecessary details to it. Thanks for the tip though, I remember it in my next project.
Honestly looks great. At least from this angle. If you got the proportions right and all the main shapes look right from all angles… then you’ve created a really nice looking character.
if you start with the texture so early, you stop improving your eye for human forms! please don’t do that! you can improve a lot more the anatomy. no texture will fix the mesh. If you project a texture it will look good from that angle, and then you can’t move it, so why do a 3d if you have only one good angle?
Please do a full clean up! you first need to have good forms, primary forms, and some secondary forms, but in a clean and beautiful way! then will come the details. Proportions are almost done, now, look hard at secondary forms, look hard at the references, look at the angles, look, ant the relations, look at the volumes!
In did! Much improved! But, not enougth, take your references again and look at the ears, the mouth, the neck, the forehead. You need references for all angles posible, and with diferent ligth sources. Please, don’t give up! You are in a good track! You are like 45% there, for the level you are, the key now is observation, don’t interpretate, just copy the angles, the shape, the contour, if the angle of the tip of the nose is 46,8° just go for it, think in angles, think in distances, just forget interpretation. 4 or 5 looks at the references and 1 brush stroke, not 1 look and 20 strokes, it won’t work.
Not yet!!!
You did great!! but you can do better still.
Take a hard look at the parts I mark in red.
And if you can, so I can help you more, post your references.
I have habit to use references form here and there and I don’t have those saved on my computer unfortunately.
This one I mostly used for the side view of the ear and I can’t really see whats wrong at the part you have marked to the ear.
I’m really grateful and I do appreciate Tonatiuh you taking your time to help me improve and even marking the spots from the head that needs to be improved. I never could got even near as close to this authentic head without you Tonatiuh kicking on my ass not to call it finished!
But DAMN! This project is starting to take way more time that was my intention.
I like to think the way that once I’m here to practice head sculpting I could as well do it as perfectly I can, but I mean there’s always to improve but at some point it just have to be called finished.
I’m trying to do my best to fix those marked parts, but after that I need to advance to next phase before I get bored and abandon the project.
Well you can stop wherever you want, is up to you.
But i just found a problem in you sistem of references, you have to alwais have diferent angles, pictures are 2d, you need various angles to properly see the 3d. And come on don’t loose the references, just make a collage for every proyect.
Is your proyect!
This is pretty much ready as far as I go with the sculpting. Prolly have to do some adjustments to the neck area, but I consider the face finished. I am happy with the result.
