Rome Colosseum

I come up with a work, building the Colosseum, first was to maintain the original design, but several problems arose in how to cast various parts of the building and little time to model the shape.
Even tried but I’m very new to blender and started to improvise, building it with imperfections

First problem building a round shape along with the arches.
Then I made made and positioning things by eye.

But here’s my work in progress.

http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=141930 I dont know if youve seen this already or not but seems someone is working on a roman colosseum already. Now im not telling you to stop the project because its fine what your doing. But maybe so you can get a different product you can model the present day colosseum as it is today. That way you can do something different like modelling the collapsed sections of the amphitheatre. Thats just my opinion do what you please and good luck

beginning to look like it

keep working and you’ll get something close to it

what did you mean by making round shape for arches?

happy 2.5

What I mean is that there are 80 arches and I did one, and duplicated the rest, and sometimes the arches don’t perfectly match the plant. And the one I made does not follow the curvature of the Coliseum, ie the object is flat.

How did you made this part of the Colosseum?

well i was beginning to work at that level of detail but stop cause i did not have enough precision on the outside curve!
so yes this is one of the problems there is when you make this layout!
cause the outside curve is not an ellispe but you could approximate it with one if you want to!

now you could leave it as a segmented curve and may be try to apply subsurf and see what it gives!

or you could modify you original segment and make it a little curved and then copy this to other part!

but it’s not easy cause we don’t really have a spin funtion of a curve only circle!
might be able to extrude the exterior wall several times manually following the outside curve and then add the arch aqnd window inside

hope it helps

What your saying makes sense and it helps but I will leave it as it is.
You are very helpful and nice, thanks for the replies you made

oh and keep work in your work  I want to see some progress

well i continue gathering new infor on it
to first get a very precise shape not only an ellipse approximation
and i still need to complete a script to do this in 2.5

also i just got some new stones texturing using volume and the new planet texture
which allows to do very nice stones texture in blender now
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=203917&p=1752759#post1752759

so with time i will complete my model hopefully this year
but it’s a lot more work then i tough ! LOL

keep working on your model for the inside and show us how it goes

salutations

ok
yes I imagine the work that you’re having

I have this picture that I stole from your topic :):

My problem- I began to model that picture in the front view and after I end it how do I make the spin to cover all the inside of the ellipse colosseum? If the shape of the Coliseum was a perfect circle it was easy.

you have to do the cross section then you manually extrude and follow the outside curve

which means you do the cross section with no stair or things that don’t extrude along the curve
hope you see what i mean here!

but you can include the inside stadium stair which are along the inside curve!

and for the exits in the inside stadium stairs you will have to remove some of the vertices and add the exits afterward

also you may not include the outside wall with arches and window
which can be manually duplicated i guess!

another trick i just saw do the cross section first extrude along the outside curve
then check out all faces normal and correct everything then it will make your life a lot easier !

salutations

yes I get it, the first part. I will try it.
thanks

(mistake)…

I made this:
http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/7599/zzze.png
I get the explanation but does not make much sense to me. If I apply the extrude It won’t work because the underside has a different angle from the top.

the cross section is constant widht inner to outer edge all around ok
so just extrude and move it sideways and follow the elliptical outside curve!

you can also include like i’v shown some of the main corridors
see my drawing extruded

sorry be back late tonight or tomorrow

happy 2.5

i think I get it, I do the extrude and have to rotate after to match the curve. Is that?

EDIT: shouldn’t be this because I’m not getting the result I want

that’s good
the thing is you may need to do more then one extrude per segment or arches for the inside part

but you could model the outside wall independantly to get a smoother outisde wall
let say 5 or 12 segments per arch to get a good smooth outside surface
but not including the arch which can be added afterward one by one

its’ tedious to do it manually but that’s the only way to get a smooth model!

i see that you already have the columns locations so idon’t need to load up one

now you don’t need to do the whole 80 segment only 1/4 of it then use mirror to complete the whole stadium
so make 1/4 of the ellipse model and it’s almost done!

by outside wall i mean only the flat continous part of the outide wall

see pic here i show a straight section but you would have to extrude this may be 8 or 12 times for each arch and follow the high precision ellipse with let say 256 segments
so that the outside part looks very smooth
then you can add the arches and wall between inbetween plus the columns

here i assume you don’t really need the inside details
and in any case i still don’t have all theses inside details yet!

salutations

can you PM me the drawings you have used here!
or give me the URL

never seen thieses ones before
i might find new details for the inside may be!

Thanks happy 2.5

thanks for this high res dwg!

did you understand the process for doing the outisde wall and inside
which could be 2 objects or may be one if you want !

is there a site for theses dwg ?
or did you take it inside a book?

how do you identify the levels on this drawing?

Thanks salutations

i tried to fit the approximate ellipse above your plan and looks like the upper part is not to scale compared to the lower part!

did you try that ?

also do you know how to read this dwg for the stairs
which one are going up or down ?

happy 2.5

i found a pic for more precision for the ionic capital
see pic

but not certain if for all the ionic columns
cause i have other pic showing another model!

salutations

here is example fo external part of the wall rounded
hope you get what i mean here

this part can be done as an independant object or not
depends how to choose to do it!
